What is the SPICA Mission ?

SPICA is the next-generation infrared mission, which is to be launched by the Japanese HIIA rocket into one of the libration points of the Sun-Earth system L2. This mission is optimized for mid- and far-infrared astronomy with a large (> 3.5 m), cooled (4.5 K) telescope. The target year of launch is 2010. cooled (4.5 K) telescope,

Main Characteristics of the SPICA Mission

Large optics cooled mechanical cryocoolers with the help of effective radiative cooling. No liquid Helium.

The SPICA has the best mid- and far-infrared sensitiviy among the proposed missions
