TAE KWON DO STRIKING TECHNIQUES

Although Tae Kwon Do is famous the world over for it's spectacular and devastating kicking techniques, it also incorporates a great many hand and arm strikes. Where as the kicking technique would be naturally advantageous and preferred over greater distances from the opponent, at close range the Tae Kwon Do student must also master the many and varied hand techniques of the art.

FRONT PUNCH

Moving hands in a piston action, drive the punch out (palm up) in a straight, direct line to the centre of the target. Just before impact the wrists are twisted to acheive maximum power. The Opposite hand pulls back to hip.
Impact area : Fore and middle finger knuckles

INNER KNIFE HAND

Bring striking hand from behind ear in almost straight line towards target (side of neck), with fingers pointing up. Just before impact the wrist is twisted 90 degrees inward. The Opposite hand pulls back to hip.

OUTER KNIFE HAND

Bring striking hand from behind opposite ear across the body towards target (side of neck), with thumb side pointing up. Just before impact the wrist is twisted 90 degrees outward. The Opposite hand pulls back to hip.

BACKFIST STRIKE

Bring striking hand from opposite shoulder forwards towards target (bridge of nose). Just before impact the wrist is twisted so that the front knuckles come forward and slightly down on the target. Opposite hand pulls back to hip. .
Impact area : Back of hand - fore and middle finger knuckles

ELBOW STRIKE

Bring striking hand from hip around towards to the centre of your body (as if punching to your own centre), so that the elbow swings out and forwards. Opposite hand pulls back to hip.

Moving hands in a piston action, drive the hand out in a straight, direct line to the centre of the target with palm and fingers bent safely back . The Opposite hand pulls back to hip.

Moving hands in a piston action, drive the hand out (palm up) in a straight, direct line to the centre of the target. Just before impact the hand opens thrusting the fingers out and the wrists are twisted to acheive maximum power. The Opposite hand pulls back to hip

RIDGEHAND STRIKE

Bringing hand from low, behind the hip, make a cutting swing inwards, with the palm facing down towards target (side of neck). Just before impact the hand tips slightly down for extra power. The Opposite hand pulls back in a straight line to the hip
