INTRODUCTION

To prepare a proposal for ISO and in particular to prepare details of the observations, a potential observer has to be familiar with the unit conventions used for ISO observations and with some aspects influencing the observations, such as the astronomical background, source confusion and straylight. This part contains a description of this astronomical information with an emphasis on ISO related aspects.
