Objectives

A synergistic observation program with Subaru telescope and the Nancy Grace Roman Telescope has been discussed between US (Roman) and Japan (Subaru) scientists. A coordinated efforts utilizing the 100 nights of Subaru reserved for this program will enhance Roman science and enable new, joint science projects.

So far, we had a series of three workshops (2017, 2018, 2019 (as a part of Subaru Telescope 20th Anniversary)). The proposed synergistic observations have been discussed in these workshop and summarized in a White paper. An abbreviated version of this white paper has been submitted to the US 2020 Astronomy and Astrophysics Decadal Survey. The main purpose of this year's workshop is to discuss a possibility of the front-loading of a part of our Subaru-Roman Synergistic program.

Total 312 nights discussed in the aforementioned white paper is three times more than the reserved 100 nights. Especially 78% of the required times are in Dark nights with HSC/PFS. Furthermore, due to the fact that a large SSP (Subaru Strategic Program, a large program up to 360 night) is expected to start in 2023A and last until 2027B, Dark nights with HSC will be relatively more available in 2022 (A,B) before the SSP starts. Therefore, the front-loading of a part of our Subaru-Roman Synergistic program in this time slot may be worth considering for more efficient execution.

We also encourage further coordinated discussions in the development of preliminary ‘candidate programs’ for the entire 100 nights with initiatives by the Roman SITs, or Japanese Roman Science Collaborators. This activity is important not only to prepare more for instrumentation/time allocation on Subaru but also to stimulate science activities and decide on the front-loading of the program at this early stage.

The proposed activity is coordinated in a bottom-up manner. We would like to ask the motivated SITs and other groups to participate in the development of the preliminary concepts of the ‘candidate programs’. For this purpose, we would like to ask them to give the nominal and minimum requested number of nights of each program and identify, if any, a portion of the program that can be front-loaded. We also welcome new or updated proposals from WP.
